Look on the side of your tyre for this:
- 205Width in mm
- 55Profile: sidewall height as a % of the width
- RRadial construction
- 16Wheel size in inches
- 91Load index (615kg per tyre)
- VSpeed rating (149mph)
What the numbers mean
- 205 is the width of the tyre in millimetres
- 55 is the profile: the sidewall height as a percentage of the width
- R means radial construction, which almost every car tyre is
- 16 is the wheel (rim) diameter in inches
- 91 is the load index: how much weight each tyre can carry (91 = 615kg)
- V is the speed rating: the maximum speed the tyre is built for (V = 149mph)
Where to find it
- On the sidewall of the tyre itself
- On a sticker inside the driver's door frame or fuel flap
- In the car's handbook
If you can't read it, or it's not safe to look, send us a photo on WhatsApp or just give us your reg and we'll work it out.
Why the load index and speed rating matter
Replacement tyres should match or exceed the load index and speed rating your car needs. Fitting a lower rating can affect safety and your insurance. We always check this before fitting.
Common questions
Can I fit a different size tyre?
Only sizes approved for your car. Tyres on the same axle should always be the same size.
Do I need to know my tyre size before I call?
It helps, but it isn't essential. Your reg or a photo of the tyre is enough.
