Can You Drive on a Flat Tyre?

Short answer: No, apart from moving a short distance at very low speed to get somewhere safe. Driving on a flat damages the tyre beyond repair, can damage the wheel, and makes the car hard to steer and stop.

What happens if you do

  • The sidewall gets crushed and the tyre is ruined, so a simple repair becomes a replacement
  • The wheel rim can bend or crack
  • Steering and braking become unpredictable

Run-flat tyres are different

If your car has run-flat tyres, you can drive a limited distance at reduced speed. Check your handbook for the limits, and get it looked at as soon as possible.

Common questions

Can driving on a flat damage the wheel?

Yes. With no air in the tyre the wheel rim can hit the road and kerbs, which can bend or crack it, and the tyre's sidewall breaks down quickly.

What about run-flat tyres?

Run-flats are built to be driven a limited distance at reduced speed when they lose pressure. Check your handbook: many quote around 50 miles at up to 50mph.
