UK Tyre Tread Depth Law

Short answer: The legal minimum tread depth for cars in the UK is 1.6mm, across the central three-quarters of the tread and all the way round the tyre. Each illegal tyre can mean a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points.

The 20p test

Put a 20p coin into the main tread grooves. If you can see the outer band of the coin, your tread may be close to or below the legal limit. Check in a few places on each tyre.

Don't wait for 1.6mm

Grip in the wet drops off as tread wears down, well before the legal limit. Many experts recommend changing tyres at around 3mm. Need new ones? We'll fit them at your home or work.
